1: Tom & the Colour Village & the Old Man

27-07-2026

Synopsis

Welcome to Colour Village. A village with a Grey Centre and four Colour Districts, where people wear half-coloured glasses that are best not worn for too many years—because eventually they begin to stick to your face! It's also a village where even social media is divided by colour.

Tom has just moved to the Grey Centre of Colour Village with his parents. Before long, he has made a new friend from each of the four Colour Districts. He also meets the Old Man, who lives on the edge of the forest. Known throughout the village as the crazy inventor, Ben has spent the past twenty years trying to create a pair of multi-coloured glasses with clear prescription lenses for everyone in Colour Village. Everyone warns Tom to stay away from him—so naturally, Tom goes to meet him.

Together they discover a remarkable way of understanding Colour Village: a simple model in the shape of a flower. With the Flower Model tucked safely under his arm, Tom sets off with one straightforward goal—to celebrate with his new friends at a party in Ben's garden on the edge of the Colour Forest. While Ben is so absorbed in playing his drums that he doesn't notice what's happening around him, someone else succeeds in doing what he has been trying to achieve for twenty years...

And how!

The Opening

1     Moving House!

It was a glorious morning when Tom woke up in the Colour Village for the very first time—a place where, if you weren't careful, you might never be able to take off your colour glasses again. Tom didn't know that yet. Just as no one had told him that, in the strange Colour Village, colours argued with one another and even went to war. Stranger still, they took in each other's refugees from those very wars—only to start arguing all over again about who should pay the bill. And the bill was always settled in the one colour everyone in the Colour Village seemed to treasure above all others: Gold. Even though the people of the Colour Village wouldn't trade their colour glasses for all the gold in the world...

Tom had arrived the previous evening with his parents, long after darkness had fallen. The removal van had brought all their belongings earlier that day. The living room was crammed with furniture: a yellow dining table surrounded by brightly coloured chairs, a blue sofa, two yellow cupboards, and a mountain of cardboard boxes. All the beds had already been made. "We'll unpack everything tomorrow," his father, Rob, had said. Tom had been so tired that he had gone straight to bed.
